Bon Secours Groundbreaking 2By C. Bart Roundtree, M.D., Medical Director, Pediatric Specialty, Lead Physician, Pediatric Service Line

Over the years, Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital has become Bon Secours’ hub for pediatric care. When we opened our Pediatric Emergency Department in 2013 – the only ED in Richmond staffed with 24-hour board-certified pediatric emergency medicine doctors – we made an investment and a commitment to serve central Virginia’s children with specialized care and compassion. Our Pediatric ED, like our other pediatric hospital units, is made specifically for children, designed with the ultimate patient and family experience in mind, to help ease anxiety and provide the highest level of care and a positive hospital experience.

Within the St. Mary’s Hospital campus are a variety of our pediatric specialties and specialized pediatric units, such as the NICU and pediatric intensive care unit, general pediatric unit, and multiple specialty clinics that support St. Mary’s in-patient services as well as serve a larger population of out-patient visits. These clinics include cleft and craniofacial, endocrinology, gastroenterology, lung care and neurology, orthopedics and cardiology. While we are proud to offer a comprehensive pediatric specialty approach, these outpatient practices are currently spread between two medical office buildings. While we have always worked to meet the needs of our patients by offering same day specialty visits between multiple specialists, we know the challenges coordinating visits poses for our patients’ families, many of whom may have special equipment.

As our pediatric specialties have grown, we recognize that we can do more to care for our patients and their families – and we are excited to share what comes next.

Last month, Bon Secours broke ground on a new pediatric-only medical office building (MOB). This new MOB, expected to be complete in fall 2020, will be located on the former Westhampton School property at Patterson and Libbie Avenue and serves as an extension of the St. Mary’s Hospital campus. And as you can imagine, this new three-story, 55,000 square foot pediatric MOB will be designed and equipped to meet the unique needs of our pediatric patients and their families. In addition, this new facility is being designed with our community in mind, including a chapel and teaching facilities to reflect the rich history of the Westhampton School.

Not only will this state-of-the-art facility house all of our pediatric specialties in one space, but we are also partnering with Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR) as one of the anchoring tenants to bring the additional pediatric specialists not currently offered at St. Mary’s, such as urology and nephrology, to this new space.

This MOB will maximize the combined outpatient resources of our two health systems to enhance access to quality pediatric care and improve the health and well-being of children in central Virginia.

As a pediatric gastroenterologist, I have collaborated with CHoR specialists behind the scenes to troubleshoot complicated cases and deliver the highest quality of care for my patients. Now, as we continue to coordinate care, we will be just a floor away from many specialists creating even greater opportunities to collaborate and improve the health of central Virginia’s children – together.

What this facility will allow us to do as far as improving the way we deliver care is two-fold. The first is that we will have a physical space designed for children, meaning we can better provide a quality of care that is specific to our patients’ needs. The second is that it provides a space that’s not only more accessible and convenient for our patients and their families, but more approachable. Now, our patients with multiple diagnoses coordinating visits with multiple doctors can come to one convenient, kid-friendly location for their care.

When it comes to taking care of the children of our community – collaboration is key.

Bon Secours Groundbreaking 1I am thrilled Bon Secours is partnering with CHoR to create a unique experience and improve the health and well-being of our patients.

We are excited about this recent announcement and we look forward to sharing more information about the new pediatric MOB in the coming months.
